Chapter Thirty

The first day of the rest of this version of Rebecca’s life started just the way she imagined it. She slept as long as she wanted and woke to find Duncan still sound asleep in the bed next to her. Brilliant sunshine poured in through the small slit where the thick curtains didn’t quite reach.

She yawned and stretched, put on her silk robe, then padded barefoot across the deep-pile carpet to the phone. She dialed “O” and after one ring, heard a crisp “Front desk.”

“Do you have room service?”

A click was followed by, “Room service, what can we do for you?”

Fifteen minutes later, Rebecca opened the door to their room and a man in a white jacket pushed a gold cart into the room. A large silver coffee pot sat on the cart, surrounded by half a dozen pastries. Rebecca hadn’t been able to make up her mind, so she had ordered one of everything they had.

The man handed Rebecca a bill and said, “If you sign at the bottom, it will be added to your bill.”

“Wonderful,” Rebecca said, signing the tab. “But here, this is for you, for bringing it up.” She slipped the man a folded ten dollar bill.

It disappeared into his front pocket as though it had never existed. “Thank you so much.” He paused and looked at Rebecca. “My name is Ramon. If you need anything at all during your stay, dial room service and ask for me. I will take care of it for you.” He touched a finger to his forehead in a small salute and let himself out.

Rebecca looked at Duncan, who had buried his head beneath his pillow and was currently pretending to be dead. She crossed the room and pulled the curtains open wide, letting the golden light pour into the room.

She turned to Duncan and said, “Ta-da!”

Duncan slumbered on.

“It is 10:30 in the morning, and we didn’t get in all that late last night.” She closed her fingers around the pillow that covered his head and gave a yank.

“Oh, my God,” Duncan said, still keeping his eyes closed and his face buried in the mattress. “I forgot what a bitch you are.”

Rebecca took no offense, but plunked down on the bed and laid her head across his back. “Come on, it’s the first day of our new life. The sun is shining, I can see the ocean waves breaking against the shore, and I waited until the coffee and pastries arrived before I woke you up. I think you owe me an apology.”

“Coffee?” Duncan raised his head and looked around until his eyes settled on the coffee pot. “You are forgiven, but we’re going to have to work something out about our sleeping schedules. You like to get up at ungodly early times like 10:30, and I like to sleep in a bit.”

Rebecca poured coffee into a china cup and added a splash of cream and two sugar cubes. She stirred, then set the cup down next to Duncan’s head.
